Spiky Butter Murukku


  1. Rice flour – 1 1/2 cup
  2. Chick pea flour – 1 cup
  3. Asafoetida – 2 pinch
  4. Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp
  5. Roasted gram powder – 2 tbsp
  6. Butter(softened) – 2 tbsp
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Water as req



  • First Powder the roasted gram before starting the process
  • This is the murukku press and the star is the base for it
  • Using this we will be making the murukku
  • Here comes our flour mixture rice flour, chick pea flour, roasted gram flour, cumin, asafoetida, salt give everything a good mix
  • Add the butter and blend it into the flour
  • check the salt (incase if your adding later mix the salt with water and add)
  • Make it into a soft dough by sprinkling water little by little
  • Make sure to brush the murukku press with some oil
  • Make the dough into medium sized balls to easily put it into the press
  • Add the dough to the murukku press with the base on it(star base)
  • Keep some oil in a wide pan to deep fry them
  • Tightly close the murukku press and start pressing the dough into the oil
  • It comes out as spikes murukku (mullu murukku) as shown
  • When you have attained the perfect color and the sizzling oil sound has stopped it is time to take them out in a colander
  • Strain them and our perfect CRISPY yummy & easy butter murukku is READY!!
  • Store them in a air tight container for long lasting best murukku.
