Vathal Kuzhambu

Preparation time: 5 min          Cooking time: 15 min          Serves: 4


  1. Vengaya vadavam / vathal – 2 (Home made)
  2. Fenugreek seeds – 1 tbsp
  3. Jaggery – 1 tsp or a bit
  4. Onion – 1/2
  5. Garlic – 1 bunch
  6. Any veggies like brinjal/avarakkai or indian broad beans/ladies finger/raw mango/pumpkin/drumstick
  7. Sambhar molaga thool – 3 tbsp (Home made)
  8. Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
  9. Tamarind – 1 big lemon size
  10. Salt – to taste
  11. Water as needed

  • Smear oil in a hollow pan and add the vadavam when it is dark roasted add the fenugreek seeds
  • Add the garlic saute it and add the onions saute until it is transparent
  • Add 1/2 tbsp of sambhar molaga thooland fry a bit make sure it does not get burnt
  • Add the tamarind water and add salt and turmeric powder


  • When it is boiling add the jaggery into it
  • The color should be as shown above
  • Switch off when you have attained the consistency” have it with rice”
  • READY!! Our tasty yummy vathal kuzhambu.
